Birzai

The town of Birzai lies in the far north of Lithuania, approximately 20 km away from the highway VIA Baltika, 95 km south f Riga, 210 km north of Vilnius. It boasts a glorious history, incredibly beautiful nature and sincere, hospitable people. This is a place where people of seven different religious denominations peacefully dwell and work, where Sirvena and Kiluciai lakes calmly lie, the Apascia and Agluona rivers flow. Birzai is also well known for its 2000 sinkholes, which appear when the ground caves in, and for numerous breweries, each producing unique, natural beers.

The most frequently visited place in 16th century, destroyed several times and rebuilt again. It is now the home of the "Sela" museum with its diverse exhibitions on regional art, history and nature. The beer tour, one of the most popular attractions, starts also in the fortress, covers a complete tour of the town and ends at one of the local breweries.

People,  suffering from joint, spine and muscle ailments or having problems with the peripheral nervous system are treaded and rehabilitated in Likenai sanatorium. Tourists can relax in the cozy park, highlighted by its natural springs and the ponds, which play host to a family of swans.
